The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets racked up 349 yards on the ground Thursday night to open their 2008 college football season with an impressive 41-14 pounding of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
Georgia Tech never gave the Gamecocks a chance as they built a 27-0 lead by halftime and Jacksonville State had no answer to the ground attack that averaged 7.6 yards per carry in the game. All four of Tech’s touchdowns in the first half came from the running game, the first a 21-yard burst from Jonathan Dwyer.
Quarterback Josh Nesbitt didn’t toss any TDs but scrambled for a pair in the first half and Dwyer bookended the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets the big lead.
Ryan Perrilloux put the Gamecocks on the board to start the third quarter with a 5-yard TD pass to Maurice Dupree but Tech countered with another long TD run as Roddy Jones went 49-yards to bury Jacksonville State’s hopes.
Georgia Tech will open their ACC season next week when they face Boston College.
