Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader now facing 11 counts related to genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, has refused to enter a plea in his trial before a UN tribunal in The Hague.
Karadzic labeled the tribunal a “court of NATO” and when asked by the judge, “You're charged with genocide... How do you plead, guilty or not guilty?” the 63-year-old responded, “I will not plead, in line with my standpoint as regards this court.”
When asked by the judge if that response would be the same for the remaining ten charges Karadzic stated, “Absolutely, yes.”
The charges are tied to the Bosnian civil war in the 1990s in which Karadzic is accused of attempting to wipe out the Bosnian Muslim (Bosniak) and Bosnian Croat ethnic groups. Prosecutors have keyed on the killings of more than 8,000 in Srebrenica as well as the shelling of Sarajevo.
After 13 years on the run Karadzic was captured on July 13 in Belgrade.
