Just days after Russia formally recognized the independence of breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia the government of Georgia has responded by announcing plans to cut diplomatic ties with Russia.
Georgia, having already removed its ambassador in Moscow, will not be sending him back and plans to remove all diplomats from the Russian capital.
On Aug. 7 Georgian troops entered South Ossetia in an attempt regain control of the region that had broken away in the 1990s. Russia responded with airstrikes and then ground troops which eventually made their way deep into Georgian territory.
After nearly two weeks Russia agreed to pull their troops out of Georgia but they have maintained a military presence in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia as well as in buffer zones, a move they say is needed to ensure the safety of residents.
Several Western countries have criticized Russia for violating Georgia’s “territorial integrity” but Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ignored any further calls to withdraw troops. Russia is now reported to be planning to extend its involvement in the two regions.
