First Hand Tales from Haunted Bed and Breakfasts

Gettysburg Battlefield B&B
Pennsylvania Bed and Breakfasts
Florence Tarbox, Innkeeper at the Battlefield B&B told BnBFinder: "My inn is on the Gettysburg Battlefield, which is about 120 miles from Philadelphia. Guests tell me stories every week about spirits that visit them during their stay. A lady in blue comforts the guests with songs and hugs. An old farmer stomps up the stairs, but never comes back down. A figure in blue lurks at the end of the bed, sometimes pressing down on the sheets. Recently, the guests recorded a voice in the parlor. They asked the spirit who he was. He replied, "Judson." The guests didn't know who that was, but we were completely taken aback when we heard the recording. The cavalry forces who fought here on the South Cavalry Battlefield were led by Judson Kilpatrick. These are just a taste of the kinds of experiences guests have".

The Groveland Hotel at Yosemite National Park
California Bed and Breakfasts
The ghost of an old gold-miner named Lyle frequently and playfully haunts this historic gold-rush inn. This gentlemanly spirit occupied room 15 for many years until his death in 1927, but Lyle seems to have remained in the pristine comfort of "his" room. Of the seventeen stately rooms in this bed and breakfast inn, the resident ghost typically plays tricks on the staff and guests in or near room 15. Rumored to have been fastidiously hygienic and an eccentric recluse, Lyle is not particularly fond of finding clutter or a woman's cosmetics on his dresser. If he finds them there, he typically moves them to a nearby sink or knocks them onto the floor. His other mysterious antics include turning lights off and on and off and on, and Lyle often delights in turning the shower on when no one is looking. Just last month a female guest reported her make-up not falling, but jumping off the dresser and other items moved from the dresser to the sink.

White Lilac Inn
New Jersey Bed and Breakfasts
Here's a great ghost story from the innkeeper of the White Lilac Inn...

I knew the minute I stepped onto the property that I loved this house...

We started to really work on the house mid-September and I think I was up and down the staircase at least a 100 times a day we used so much Clorox while cleaning I was surprised you could smell anything else, but just as I would ascend the stairs in about the same spot I would smell a light hint, a bit of a floral scent, I didn't think much of it until my Aunt and mother in law keep asking me what perfume I was wearing (scraping plaster and trying to put a dent in this house (definitely a sink or swim proposition) I had no time for perfume...

Before we could start as a B&B we needed to change not only the name of the place, but conjure up a clean Victorian image, hence...The White Lilac Inn (only there weren't any lilacs on the property!).

Sally Mann Randock Francis had married three times loved to throw parties and adored this house.) She was a NY model and her 2nd husband (Steven Randock) was in advertising, they were always entertaining ...even the Ziegfeld girls stayed here! During prohibition the original butler's pantry was know as "the bar", Betty Grabel pin-ups and all.

Sally's bedroom was on the second floor facing the front of the house and she always wore not only floral perfume, but corsages of fresh flowers...it has to be her descending the stairs every now and then keeping her eye on things.

I do feel she is a kindred spirit and I love having her in this house! I have had people enter the Inn and comment on a good aura that they could sense. I was also told by guests who experienced this, that this scent might be a "residual haunting".

1843 Battery Carriage House Inn
South Carolina Bed and Breakfasts
In a historic city that preserves remnants of the past, it seems natural that former inhabitants would still lurk about. In Charleston, you'll find that spirits are just as much a part of the city as the living. Known as "Charleston's most haunted inn," Battery Carriage House Inn is reportedly home to two ghosts: a "gentleman ghost" who could be a young man who, for no reason known to anyone, jumped off the roof of the inn and killed himself and the "headless torso" that, by the look of the clothing he has been seen in, was a person from the civil war. Though the current innkeepers have not seen these ghosts, guests and employees alike have had odd encounters - many that are eerily similar. The most recent encounter was just 4nights ago when guests heard their doorknob rattling as if someone was trying to enter, but there was no one outside. Some may attribute these occurrences to the peculiarities of an old house, but several, otherwise skeptical guests have experienced these ghosts and are sure it was real.
