Trained Monkeys To Guard Athletes And Visitors At Games
People responsible for organizing Commonwealth Games in New Delhi are faced with a number of problems. One of them includes wild animals that are infesting the playing fields and housing complexes.
Athletes as well as visitors may be relieved to know that a professionally trained team has been hired to beef up security arrangements at the venue. However, they may be a bit concerned to find out that they will be protected by a group of monkeys.
A report published by UK's Daily Telegraph says that a group of langur monkeys have been trained to chase off wild animals, such as snakes, stray dogs and other monkeys. Langur monkeys are known to be highly intelligent creatures but also territorial and aggressive, making them extremely effective in scaring away other wild animals from a particular territory. According to India's NewsX, one langur monkey can shoo away a group of 20 monkeys.
The Commonwealth Games, which are held after every four years, are due to start off this weekend. Earlier, some athletes had threatened to boycott the event because of poor lodgings and influx of wild animals.
There have been reports of wild monkeys attacking people around the venue and stealing food. To make matters worse, flooding in a nearby area has resulted in snakes fleeing towards the game venue, with one participant even seeing a cobra in his quarter.
