SEO in the Age of Austerity

A recent report published by the Wall Street Journal states that officials at the U.S. Treasury have warned Europeans against adopting austerity measures in the present economic scenario. This advice, according to the officials, will not be conducive for the economic recovery measures. Now, can something similar be said for SEO? Of course the treasury officials would not have anything to do with that, but is it feasible to tighten your purse strings as far as search engine marketing is concerned in tighter economic conditions?

 Darwin

The answer could be yes and no, both. First, let us examine the no part. Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest no doubt is applicable in all spheres of life. The same is applicable in the business world too. Now suppose, you stop promoting your website or business using SEO in tense economic conditions, one thing clearly that you will be conveying to the world and potential customers are-you are weak. You want to avoid this.

Lots of Work

If you or your business really cannot afford paid SEO services, try finding alternate solutions. The WWW is full of resources which will guide you on how to do SEO without spending even a single penny. Of course, a tremendous amount of time and dedication would be required on your part.

Tough Choice

Contrarily, let’s examine why you should stop promoting your business. Say, you have a business targeted towards middle class people that is very niche and their resources are stretched thin. Since your client base is already under financial strain and they have already tightened their purse strings, there is no way they are going to buy your services. An excellent example would be, affordable custom made cruise holidays. Though this is not a wrong business to be in, the timing is not ideal. The immediate question is, should you altogether quit doing SEO for your services? No, that would be fatal, but you could stop buying keywords for the business and resort and conduct some Do-It-Yourself SEO.

Think it Through

In conclusion, you should know when to tighten your promotional budgets. Hastily making any decision could prove to be disastrous for your business and its prospects.
