Egyptian billionaire and former parliament member Hisham Talaat Moustafa has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 2008 murder of pop singer Susanne Tamim.
Moustafa was convicted of hiring former policeman Mohsen al Sukkari to kill Tamim in her Dubai apartment. Tamim was stabbed and her throat was slit. Sukkari, who received 28 years in prison, was paid $2 million to carry out the hit. Prosecutors accused Moustafa of ordering the killing “as a means of taking revenge.”
Moustafa and Sukkari were originally sentenced to death by hanging, but Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court overturned the sentencing on a legal technicality. During the first trial, Moustafa’s lawyers say the billionaire wanted to take Tamim as a second wife, but did not because his family did not approve.
Following his arrest, Moustafa was removed from his position in the Shura Council in the Parliament of Egypt. He also resigned as chairman of Talaata Moustafa Group, which was founded by his father.
