Alcohol Dependence: A Social Problem

What is Alcohol Dependence?

Doctors refer to it as a chronic ailment that can cause severe damage to the mind and body. People who have this disorder have constant craving for alcohol which they need to fill. Though they keep on telling themselves that it’s bad for the health, they still find it hard to refuse a drink. So instead of quitting they keep asking for more. They become more addicted to the substance every time they have a bottle or more.

So when can you tell that one is already suffering from alcohol dependency? There are many signs to watch out for. The thing about alcohol dependents is that they make it a habit to drink everyday from morning until they are too drunk to take a sip. They don’t drink to celebrate or be accepted by the group. They do it because they want to be free from their worries in life. Alcohol can do that to them that’s why getting themselves drunk has become an addiction.

Treating alcohol dependency is no easy task. It takes a lot of time, effort, and discipline especially on the part of the addict. Treatment often starts with detoxification wherein alcohol must be completely removed from the body system. It is a critical process since the patient can suffer from relapse any time. It should also be done with the guidance of an expert to ensure that the whole process works successfully.

Alcohol dependence can be avoided. It is the responsibility of everybody regardless of age, gender, nationality, or economic status to fight addiction especially to substances like alcohol. Educating young and old alike of the dangers of alcoholism can help a lot. School children must be taught of its harmful effects and how it can be prevented by the time they enter elementary. Meanwhile, older kids must be oriented about alcoholism and why they should stay away from alcoholic drinks.

You too can do your share in preventing alcohol dependency. It is your obligation as a responsible citizen or as a loving friend to help those suffering from alcohol addiction especially people who are close to you. Though there are lots of rehabilitation centers out there who can provide treatments, it would mean a lot for the patient to know you truly care.
