Ecuador president Rafael Correa released a defiant TV interview Thursday and declared a state of emergency after an angry mob of national police attacked him in Quito. The police, apparently angry over salary and benefit cuts, lobbed a canister of tear gas at Correa as he stood in the street trying to reason with police officers. Another man punched Correa and attempted to rip the gas mask off his face.
Correa fled to a nearby hospital, where he filmed the interview. "This is a coup attempt," he said.
In a phone interview with state-run Ecuador TV Correa said the mob was trying to get into the hospital and possibly hurt him. “I won't relent. If something happens to me, remember my infinite love for my country, and to my family I say that I will love them anywhere I end up,” he said.
The minister for interior security denied there have been benefit and salary cuts. "He who says that is lying," said Miguel Carvajal.
