Northern Mexico Firefights Lead to Arrests of 30 Drug Cartel Members

Two days of raids in the northern state of Tamaulipas lead to the arrest of 30 members of the Gulf Cartel, a spokesman for the Mexican Navy said Wednesday. The raids were carried out in the cities of Matamoros, where the Gulf cartel is based, and Reynosa.  

The men, who are accused of drug trafficking and extortion among other crimes, were taken to Mexico City for further questioning. The items seized from the cartel include over $400,000 in pesos and American currency, 43 assault rifles, 21 hand grenades, 10 handguns, 2 rocket launchers and 1 rocket.

The raids left 8 cartel members and 1 marine dead.
