Tyler Clementi, the 18-year old Rutgers freshman who committed suicide after his sex footage leaked out, had already complained of voyeurism before his tragic death. Clementi jumped off of the George Washington Bridge in New York, after his roommate secretly videotaped him having sex with a man.
Clementi's postings on gay message boards and Yahoo! reveal that he was aware of his roommate's voyeuristic tendencies. He wrote in the postings that he contacted the dorm advisor and asked for a new room. He also had a discussion with two unnamed "higher authorities" on the issue. There were, however, no hints of suicidal thoughts in his postings. There are also no indications of a progress on the room request that he had made with the dorm advisor.
His roommate Dhanur Ravi, 18, live streamed the sex video on social networking websites and invited his followers on Twitter to join the viewings. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday and charged with invasion of privacy. He was later released after posting a $25,000 bail. His friend Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton Junction, was also arrested and later released without bail.
Rutgers University spokesman has said that he cannot comment until the investigations are completed. The police have searched every room in the dormitory in which Clementi lived and have also questioned other students on whether they watched the video. Clementi's death has raised new concerns about student safety in college dorms as suicide rates have seen a rise in recent years.
