UCI Chairman refuses to comment on Alberto Contador suspension

Pat McQuaid, chairman of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has refused to comment on the suspension of the Tour de France champion Alberto Contador. The three-time winner of the prestigious competition is facing doping charges.

McQuaid is currently in Melbourne, Australia, where he is attending the UCI congress meeting. The cycling boss told The Associated Press he was "completely limited" in what he could say about the doping scandal.

Contador is facing a suspension ever since the World Anti-Doping Agency lab in Germany found a small amount of the banned substance clenbuterol in his urine sample, which was taken during the Tour on July 21.

The ace Spanish cyclist has speculated that the positive result must have been triggered by the contaminated meat that he consumed at the Tour. Two samples were taken of Contador's urine and both tested positive for clenbutreol. Both the cyclist and the UCI remained silent on his future course despite releasing a statement on the issue on Thursday.

McQuaid has expressed his confidence on the investigations and has said that the probe will continue until they reach a conclusive result. He also said that "the system works" in an efficient manner to detect any wrongdoings by the athletes.

Contador admitted failing the doping test during the 2010 Tour where he was stopped from further participation in the championship. His last Tour win was in 2009, when he beat Andy Schleck of Luxembourg by 39 seconds. This was his third Tour de France title in four years.
