Roger Federer is hoping his gold medal earned while playing doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be a good omen for the rest of the season and on Saturday it remained as the #2 knocked off Brazil’s Thiago Alves in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
In typical Federer style it was a dominant serve that controlled the match for the Swiss star as he pounded out 19 aces while landing 64 percent of his first serves. Federer did commit 46 unforced errors but preyed on Alves inability to place his serve as on 54 percent of his first efforts landed in play.
Federer is looking for his 13th Grand Slam title and his fifth U.S. Open title but he has had a rough time this year, falling in the finals at the French Open and Wimbledon, both times to Rafael Nadal. Federe has won the last four U.S. Open titles.
