College Football Scores: #3 USC Trojans Blast Virginia in Season Opener

The #3 USC Trojans had all their offensive weapons working on Saturday as they thumped the Virginia Cavaliers 52-7 in their 2008 college football season opener.

Mark Sanchez looked sharp, throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns on 26/35 passing while the running attack was balanced as four Trojans scored on the ground.

It didn’t take the Trojans long to find the endzone as Stafon Johnson scored from two yards out. Three minutes later Joe McKnight was celebrating after scoring on a 10-yard toss from Sanchez. When C.J. Gable scored on a 3-yard run with four minutes left in the first quarter the Trojans had built a 21-0 lead and Virginia was out of the game.

Sanchez added TD passes of 20 yards to Patrick Turner and 49 yards to Ronald Johnson in the third quarter as he showed he was ready to handle the job as the school’s number one quarterback. While McKnight scored on a pass from Sanchez he was extremely efficient on the ground as he averaged 10 yards per carry on his six attempts.

The Trojans rolled up 558 yards of total offense, 218 on the ground and dominated the clock as they held the ball more than 13 minutes longer than the Cavaliers. That time difference could also be attributed to the Trojans defense which held the Cavaliers to just 32 yards rushing and forced four turnovers in the game.

USC will face Ohio Sept. on Sept. 13.
