The #8 West Virginia Mountaineers opened their 2008 college football season just the way new head coach Bill Stewart said they would as their air attack was too much for the Villanova Wildcats in a 48-21 pounding on Saturday.
Pat White, used primarily as a running quarterback in the past, displayed an accurate arm on Saturday as he was 25/33 passing for 208 yards and five touchdowns. White didn’t completely abandon his running though as he also collected 63 yards on the ground.
White threw a pair of touchdown passes to Alric Arnett in the first half and another to Will Johnson as the Mountaineers built a 24-7 lead at the break.
In the second half White found Jock Sanders on a pair of TDs and when Mortty Ivy picked off Villanova’s Antwon Young and returned it 29 yards for a score in the fourth quarter the score was 48-14.
West Virginia will face East Carolina next week.
