AP Top 25 Scores Week 1: Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State, USC Trojans, Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators Start Season with Wins

The first week of the college football season is in the books and the nation’s top teams went through relatively unscathed as the top eight schools fought their way to impressive wins on Saturday.

 

Knowshon Moreno rushed for three touchdowns, Caleb King added 91 yards on the ground and Matt Stafford threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns as the he #1 Georgia beat the Georgia Southern Eagles 45-21 in their season opener.

 

Ohio State, ranked #2 to start the season, had no trouble with Youngstown State as Beanie Wells rushed for 111 yards and a TD while the Buckeyes defense limited the Penguins to just 74 yards of offense in their 43-0 victory.

 

The #3 USC Trojans ripped the Virginia Cavaliers 52-7 on Saturday as Mark Sanchez threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns and Joe McKnight rushed for 60 yards on six carries as the offense rolled up 558 yards of offense.

 

The #4 Oklahoma Sooners embarrassed the Chattanooga Mocs 57-2 on Saturday as they put 50 points on the board in the first half. DeMarco Murray rushed for 124 yards, Sam Bradford threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and Manuel Johnson had 120 yards and a TD.

 

Tim Tebow threw for 137 yards and a touchdown while Jeffrey Demps rushed for 76 yards and a TD on two carries and the #5 Florida Gators defense forced six turnovers in their 56-10 blowout of the Hawaii Warriors on Saturday.

 

Chase Daniel threw for three touchdowns and 323 yards, Derrick Washington added a pair of rushing touchdowns and 130 yards and Chase Coffman had 120 yards receiving and a TD as the #6 Missouri Tigers overcame 451 yards of passing and five touchdown tosses from Juice Williams to beat #20 Illinois.

 

Charles Scott rushed for 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Brandon LaFell had 87 yards receiving and two TDs as the #7 LSU Tigers had no trouble pounding the Appalachian State Mountaineers 41-13 on Saturday.

 

Pat White tossed five touchdowns and 208 yards and added another 63 yards on the ground while Alric Arnett and Jock Sanders each had a pair of TD receptions as the #8 West Virginia Mountaineers beat the Villanova Wildcats 48-21.

 

John Parker Wilson had a surprisingly easy time throwing for 180 yards and two touchdowns and the #24 Alabama Crimson Tide defense shut down the #9 Clemson offense, holding the Tigers to zero yards rushing and 188 yards of total offense in a 34-10 upset.

 

Ben Tate rushed for 115 yards of the 321 yards gained on the ground by the #10 Auburn Eagles who had little trouble handling an overmatched Louisiana-Monroe squad that managed just 84 yards of rushing on Saturday.

 

Colt McCoy threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns and added 103 yards and a touchdown on the ground while the #11 Texas defense held the FAU running game to 37 yards as the Longhorns blasted Florida Atlantic 52-10 in their season opener.

 

Graham Harrell threw for 536 yards and two touchdowns while Eric Morris had 196 yards receiving and Detron Lewis had 163 yards receiving as the #12 Texas Tech Red Raiders opened their season with a 49-24 beating of the Eastern Washington Eagles.

 

P.J. Hill rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns and Allen Evridge was an effective 7/10 passing with one TD as the #13 Wisconsin Badgers collected 404 yards on the ground to beat the Akron Zips 38-17 on Saturday.

 

The #14 Kansas Jayhawks used a strong defensive performance to limit the FIU Golden Panthers to just 139 yards of offense while Todd Reesing threw 256 yards and three touchdowns, all three to Dezmon Briscoe in a 40-10 rout.

 

Rudy Carpenter threw for 388 yards and a touchdown and Michael Jones had 162 yards receiving as the #15 Arizona State Sun Devils jumped to a 30-0 lead over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks and cruised to a 30-13 victory.

 

Other AP Top 25 scores from Week 1:

 

#16 BYU pounded Northern Iowa 41-17 behind 486 yards passing from Max Hall.

 

East Carolina used a blocked punt returned for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to upset #17 Virginia Tech 27-22.

 

The #19 South Florida Bulls rushed over Tennessee-Martin with 560 yards of offense in their 56-7 victory.

 

#21 Oregon used a strong second half to drop Washington 44-10 in their opener.

 

The #22 Penn State Nittany Lions used 594 yards of offense to roll over Coastal Carolina 66-10.

 

#23 Wake Forest opened their season on Thursday with a  41-13 victory over the Baylor Bears.

 

Bowling Green shut out the #25 Pittsburgh Panthers in the second half to score a 27-17 upset on Saturday.
