In what is being hailed as a major step towards the independence of the Iraqi government the U.S. military has handed over control of Anbar province, once the center of Sunni insurgency and al-Qaeda operatives.
Sunni tribal leaders were joined by U.S. and Iraqi officials at the ceremony held in Ramadi. U.S. President George Bush hailed the Sunni leaders in Anbar province for breaking from al-Qaeda in 2006 and helping shape the future of the region. In a statement released by Bush the president recognized the significance of the hand over for not only the U.S. and Iraqi troops but also, “the brave tribes and other civilians from Anbar who worked alongside them.”
Beginning in 2006 the U.S. military has worked closely with Sunni leaders to drive out al-Qaeda operatives from Anbar province. While the Sunni tribesmen showed a willingness to work with U.S. forces it remains to be seen how well they will operate with the Iraqi government.
Nearly a quarter of U.S. military deaths in Iraq have occurred in Anbar province but those numbers dropped significantly after 2006. While the U.S. military has handed over control of Anbar province the military won’t be an instant or dramatic removal of troops in the near future.
Nearly 1,300 U.S. troops have died in Anbar province since 2003.
