Strong defenses enabled the New York Giants to defeat the Chicago Bears by 17-3 on Sunday. In what is described as classic football performance, the Giants sack Jay Cutler nine times and snatched the victory out of Bears' hands.
The beleaguered Giants took advantage of playing at their home turf although their ace player Mathias Kiwanuka did not play due to neck injuries. Things started turning in Giants' favor after the first half. Defense had already eyed Cutler and they made full use of his precarious situation. The second quarter saw three sackings and fumbles of Cutlers on three consecutive plays. It all happened in just two drives. The Bears were quick to bounce back but safety Deon Grant turned the tables on them by recovering the third fumble
The Giants' intensive focus on defense was evident from the passing situations that they put their rivals into; they also canceled out their ground games effectively. The ends and tackles did not miss an opportunity and demolished the Bears' offensive line.
As the coverage was blanketed from the secondary, Cutler had to hold on to the ball for long and that proved fatal for the Bears. After nine sacks, Cutler was knocked out of the game with a concussion. His backup Todd Collins did not fare well and was also knocked out of the game.
The final tally of 10 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 disposed quarterbacks was a testament to the strong defense put up by the Giants; their pass rush, however, remained unimpressive.
