Ground Zero mosque: Wife Of Imam Rauf Says Her Family Got Death Threats
The wife of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who wants to construct an Islamic Center near New York's Ground Zero, told Sunday that her family has received death threats. Speaking on BBC's "This Week" hosted by Christiane Amanpour, Daisy Khan said that her family has filed a complaint with NYPD after receiving threatening phone calls.
"For the record, my life is under threat", she said, while adding, "Check with the Police Department. My husband's life is under threat. We do not walk around with bodyguards because we love this country".
A spokesperson for New York chief of police later confirmed that the imam and his wife have received terrorizing phone calls and said that an investigation into the matter is underway.
The televised dialogue was entitled "Holy War: Should Americans Fear Islam?" and participants included Donna Marsh O'Connor and Peter Gadiel- whose children were killed on 9/11- in addition to evangelist Franklin Graham and Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch.
Some of the most heated comments came from London via video link, where Anjem Chaudhry, from the UK-based Islamic organization Islam4UK, blamed Khan of not being a practicing Muslim and predicted that the flag of Islam will be raised over the White House one day. "This lady in your studio, she should be covering with the hijab. She's obviously not practicing", Chaudhry said.
