Social Network Ranked Number One In US Box Office

The Social Network directed by David Fincher has topped the US box office charts. The story about the founders of social network Facebook, featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, was the number one weekend movie with US$ 23 million debut.

The film follows the history of Facebook from the Harvard University, where computer genius Mark Zuckerberg (played by Eisenberg) and his friend Eduardo Saverin (played by Garfield) launch the website, through its dramatic rise with over 500 million users and stock value worth billions.

The movie also portrays the unpleasant legal battle as Saverin files lawsuits against Zuckerberg, saying that he was ripped off for millions, and three more students blaming Zuckerberg for stealing their idea.

The social networking website has declared the movie about its creator “fiction". Justin Timberlake plays the role of Sean Parker, the founder of Napster.

The other new releases of the weekend didn't have successful starts. Case 39, featuring Renee Zellweger, debuted at number seven with US$ 5.35 million dollars, whereas Let Me In, which was inspired by the novel Let the Right One In, started at number eight with US$ 5.3 million.

Animated classic Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole managed to retain the number two position for the second consecutive week with US$ 10.9 million, bringing its total to US$ 30 million.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the last weekend's highest earner, fell to number three with US$ 10.1 million, raising its total to US$ 35.9 million.
