McDowell Wins Ryder Cup For Europe
The European team has reclaimed Ryder Cup, clinching a thriller that came down to final singles match on Monday.
Team USA fought back to erase a three-point deficit and level the score, thus bringing the competition right down to the wire. Europe ultimately won 14½ to 13½ to reclaim the title clinched by the USA two years ago at Valhalla.
21 year old Rickie Fowler, the youngest member of team USA, gave visitors hope of making an unlikely comeback by winning the final three holes to level his game with Edoardo Molinari. At the 17th, Fowler managed to roll in a 15-foot birdie putt to keep the game alive, before stunning the Italian with an amazing 18-footer at the final hole.
Zack Johnson finished with a 3-2 win against Padraif Harrington minutes later to level the score at 13½.
At the end, it was Graeme McDowell who secured the winning point for Europe on the final day. The North Irishman rejoiced on the 17th after making the victorious putt as Europe clinched the title at Celtic Manor.
The Europeans had managed to start strongly in singles, while Team USA's captain Corey Pavin back loaded his lineup with the intention of rallying at the end. His plan almost achieved the desired results.
Tiger Woods, playing in the eighth spot, beat Francesco Molinari 4-3. Phil Mickelson, after losing all three of his team matches, played in the tenth spot and defeated Peter Hanson 4-2.
But Europe managed to score enough points to win the competition. Luke Donald, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Ian Poulter won their games, before McDowell finished the job for his team at the end.
