Train Accident in Indonesia Leaves 36 Dead

Officials say 36 people died and 26 others were injured Saturday in Indonesia when a train slammed into the back of another train. A spokesperson for the transport ministry said the train was stationary when it was hit from behind by the other.

The last carriage of the stationary train, which was traveling from Central Java to the capital of Jakarta, was crushed and many of the passengers inside were killed. The second train was traveling from East Java to Jakarta. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Cranes were used to lift the mangled carriages off the track.
