Baseball Off-Season kicks off with Managerial layoffs

The Mets have relieved the executive vice president and general manager Omar Minaya of his duties. They have also released the manger Jerry Manuel.

The Mets have not performed well since the past four seasons and that was a factor behind the management changes, Jeff Wilpon, the team’s chief operating officer said in a statement.

Minaya has two years remaining on his contract and the Mets will have to honor that agreement. John Ricco, the assistant general manager, will run the baseball operations for the time being.

Ken Macha, the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, was laid off on Monday after poor performance of the team. The team has lost consecutive seasons though they were the winners of the 2008 National League after gaining a wild card entry.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have also relieved their manager John Russell of his duties. He has clocked in 299 defeats in three seasons. The overall record is also not good as the franchise has lost 18 consecutive years thus making a new record for the major league.

The season has been bad for the managers as a total of eight have lost their jobs this year. There are, however, some extensions of contracts in between the firings. Dusty Baker, who is currently managing the Cincinnati Reds, has bagged a two-year contract extension through 2012. This is attributed to his leading the Cincinnati Reds to their first playoff appearance in 15 years. Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks has also seen his position becoming permanent.
