In December of 1980, Beatles legend John Lennon was shot and killed in New York, 30 years later and Lennon’s legacy lives on.
This October 9 would have marked the 70th birthday of John Lennon, and across the globe preparations are underway to mark his birthday, and remember his life and what he aspired to, and inspired other to.
Iceland is to hold the Lennon One Peace Awards, where’s Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono will present a number of awards to human rights activist and creative talents. Ono will also perform with her son Sean Ono Lennon and the Plastic Ono band in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.
Lennon’s hometown, Liverpool is set to unveil the “Peace and Harmony” John Lennon monument. The 18-foot high monument was commissioned by US arts organization the Global Peace Initiative.
In New York’s Central Park a screening of the documentary “LENNONYC” will be held, detailing the legend’s time in New York in the 1970’s. The film includes previously unseen footage, home movies and unreleased recordings from the artist.
In early November the celebrations continue with a number of charity concerts organized. On November 2 the Hard Rock Café International will play host to “Imagine There's No Hunger: Celebrating the Songs of John Lennon,” which will help to right global hunger through the WHY Hunger foundation.
November 12 will be the “All-Star Lennon Tribute Concert in NYC” featuring a number of artists including Patti Smith and Cyndi Lauper. Another tribute concert is planned for December in Liverpool, UK.
