The Hungarian government declared a state of emergency in three counties after a reservoir filled with waste from aluminum production burst Monday afternoon, sending the toxic mud in to at least 3 villages and the river Marcal. So far, four people have died and 116 others have been injured. The dead includes one man, one woman and two children ages 1 and 3. At least 7 people are missing.
The aluminum plant, Hungarian Aluminium Production and Trade Company, is located in the town of Kolontar. The toxic mud spread 1.1 cubic meters, reaching the towns of Devecser and Somlovasarhely. The government is working to stop the sludge from reaching the Danube and the Raba rivers.
"It's an ecological catastrophe," says environment state secretary Zoltan Illes.
Illes described the situation as the country’s worst-ever chemical accident. Officials fear the death toll may rise.
