Car Bomb Explodes Outside Ireland Bank

A car bomb exploded outside a bank in Londonderry, Northern Ireland just before midnight Monday. Police had received a warning about the bomb and had evacuated several buildings, including an assisted living home, a Ramada hotel and a McDonald’s restaurant.

Windows on Ulster Bank and nearby buildings were damaged in the blast. Two police officers were injured. No other injuries or deaths have been reported.

In a call to the Derry Journal, the Real IRA – which is considered a terrorist organization in the United Kingdom and in the United States, claimed responsibility for the bombing. The group’s goal is to force British withdrawal from Northern Ireland.

"I don't know what these people are trying to achieve," Londonderry mayor Colm Eastwood said of the Real IRA. “This city will not be defeated by a minority of people who think they'll free Ireland by bombing hotels."
