Authorities in Afghanistan say they seized 19 tons of Iranian explosives in Nimruz province and detained one suspect on Tuesday.
Nimruz Police Chief Abdul Jabar Purdel says the explosives were transported from Iran to Afghanistan in a 40 foot shipping container. The devices were packed in 337 boxes marked as “food, toys and kitchenware.”
Authorities in Afghanistan have previously accused Iran of supplying weapons to insurgents opposed to coalition forces. Iran has denied the accusations, but earlier this year a credible Iranian source told the U.S. military that the country planned to smuggle more weapons into Afghanistan.
