Steven Singer Celebrates 30 Years

How a small business made a huge footprint

On October 7, 1980, a 22 year old Steven Singer from Northeast Philadelphia set out to conquer the world of jewelry, in an 8’ x 18’ stair well on historic Jeweler’s Row in Center City Philadelphia.  Today, Steven occupies one of the largest storefronts in the oldest shopping district in America, and is arguably the most dominant diamond store in the country.

So how does a small business make a large impact on a region?  Steven’s successfully made his footprint on Philadelphia with his maverick, award winning advertising, exemplary customer service, and dedication to fundraising.

In 1989, Steven was the first local Philadelphia business to jump on board the Howard Stern train as he rolled into town.  Putting all his eggs in one basket, Steven cultivated a relationship that still exists today, on Howard’s SiriusXM channel, gaining Steven his first step into the national market.  In 1993, Steven set out to create his first edgy, risqué advertising campaign.  Referred to as the “Vintage Steven Singer Hot Tub” commercial, the video of ladies discussing their take on the age old question “does size matter?” set the tone for Steven’s advertising.    In 2003, Steven rolled out his controversial, yet award winning “I Hate Steven Singer” campaign, and won 2 Addy’s for the radio commercials that played during its infancy.  Just 4 years later, Steven enjoyed being interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, and saw a feature in the business section focus on his irreverent campaign that spans from all elements of outdoor to endorsement focused radio.

The advertising isn’t the only award winner to speak of.  Steven Singer was named small business person of the year by the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce in 2005.   He was the first and only jeweler to receive such an honor from the chamber.

So most people dread turning 30, right?  Well, Steven thinks things only get better with age.  One of Steven’s favorite quotes?  “It only took me 30 years to become an overnight success”.  What is the key to Steven’s success?  His trade secret?  “Treat people nice.”
