As Hurricane Gustav makes landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast its strength has been downgraded to a Category 2 yet it is still believed to be capable of Category 3 storm surges that could devastate low-lying areas like New Orleans.
Hurricane Gustav made landfall around the Dulac, Galliano, Grand Isle areas in Louisiana and as it pushes further is expected to drop at least 20 inches of rain as well as produce storm surges of 10-14 feet above normal levels.
Nearly 2 million residents in New Orleans were evacuated from the city over the past two days in preparation for what Mayor Ray Nagin called “the storm of the century.” While Hurricane Gustav may not produce the same level of destruction that Hurricane Katrina created three years ago Nagin wasn’t taking any chances when he told residents to leave the city.
As a Category 2 hurricane Gustav is packing winds of 110mph, strong enough to cause serious damage across land.
Hurricane Gustav has already killed more than 80 people in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica as it made its way into the Gulf of Mexico and took aim at the U.S. Gulf Coast.
