San Francisco Giants set a few records while defeating the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League division series on Thursday.
Tim Lincecum threw a two-hitter and struck out 14 thus playing a crucial role in taking his team to 1-0 victory over the Braves. The 14 strikeouts may not be a national record but they truly were a new statistic for the Giants in a postseason.
Linceum's performance can be compared to Roy Halladay's record setting no-hitter on Wednesday as the former played exceptionally well and with his back-to-back performance in what was his postseason debut. It was also the first time that the Giants were in a playoff game in seven years and Lincecum wanted to make that memorable for his teammates.
He destroyed the Atlanta lineup systematically and his 92 miles per hour fastball, which came in his 119th and final pitch, demolished Derrek Lee for the third time.
He had a total of five consecutive struck outs at one point and he stopped all hits between the first and seventh innings besides preventing the runners to reach third base.
The Braves had a poor start as they fielded Derek Lowe in Game 1 and hoped on his reliance on the infielders with Omar Infante playing at third base because of Chipper Jones' injury.
The Giants had two out with runners on the first and second base but it was Buster Posey from the second who scored the lone run of the playoff and took his team to victory.
