Galaxy Eyes Western Conference Top Spot with 1-0 Win

The Galaxy defeated the Philadelphia Union in a 1-0 win thanks mainly to the excellent play by star players David Beckham and Edson Buddle.

The Galaxy has plans for advancing to the MLS playoffs this fall in what will be a consecutive season for the team and that was evident from their victory over the Union. For that to happen, the team will need consistent positions on the victory stands and put up a good show.

Their start was not that good as the Union took control of the match from the whistle and mostly remained in possession of the ball for at least the first third of the match. They were unable to score a goal despite coming dangerously close to the goal post three times in just under the first 18 minutes.

The Galaxy was quick to use the opportunity that came in the 27th minute when Beckham took the corner kick and passed to Buddle who quickly sent it to the goal, his 16th of the season.

The Philadelphia team did not budge from its attacking position as the attacks continued and they would have scored had it not been the excellent defense put up by the Galaxy goalie Donovan Ricketts.

The Galaxy won three points by winning the game and that has given them a five-point lead over Real Salt Lake. They can win the top spot in the Western Conference if they win the final two matches but that can be difficult as the Salt Lake defeated the team in what was its first season loss in June.
