Rafael Nadal advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2008 U.S. open after surviving a scare from Sam Querrey 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 on Monday.
Nadal looked like he would breeze past Querrey as he easily took the first set and seemed to have command of the second set but his controlled style of playing quickly turned erratic and he dropped his first set of the Grand Slam tournament. He regrouped enough in the second set to win a tie-breaker and then controlled the third with no problem.
Nadal overcame Querrey’s 20 aces and an uncharacteristic 41 unforced errors to move into the final eight as he seeks his third Grand Slam title of the year. He already captured the French Open and Wimbledon.
