Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg donation to Newark school prompts protest by students
On Thursday Newark students turned to Facebook to protest their school claiming unsafe conditions.
In September prior to the debut of the Movie The Social Network which is based on Facebooks founder Mark Zuckerberg, Zuckerberg stepped up big with a $100 million donation to the Newark's school system.
Newark is ranked as one of the lowest in the garden state.
On Thursday, the students took matters into their own hands by speaking out for themselves staging a protest to spread awareness of their schools unsafe environment.
The students at Barringer High School in Newark claim the school is so unsafe from the rats, mice, spiders and cockroaches along with the violence that students feel unsafe each and everyday.
Zuckerberg has started something of a trend with his hefty donation. After the donation Newark Mayor Cory Booker has announced that he is trying to raise additional donations to match Zuckerberg's 100 million dollars. To date Mayor Booker has been successful in raising 40% reports the Wall Street Journal with additional contributions coming from Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. Microsoft does own a stake in Facebook.
Newark school district spokeswoman Valerie Merrit has stated the school has issues with insects and rodents, but claimed the school is cleaned regularly.
