NBA Coach Collapses During Practice, Hospitalized

Dallas Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle Collapses

Rick Carlisle, head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, collapsed during a team practice on Friday and was subsequently taken to a hospital. According to a report from the Associated Press, "Team spokeswoman Sarah Melton said Carlisle "was apparently lightheaded" and fainted on the court at the American Airlines Center. The 50-year-old coach was conscious and responding to questions as he was carried by stretcher to an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital." Melton said on Friday, "There are members of the Mavericks at the hospital with him, talking to him and he seems to be feeling better. It was all sort of precautionary — get him to the hospital and make sure he is OK." Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd, who has been with the Mavs for years now, expressed his concern for Carlisle, whom he regards as a family member. "Basketball is our job," said Kidd. "But life comes before our job or anything else. Your well-being is the most important thing. That's our coach and our family member. We got to make sure he's all right and we'll go from there."

Carlisle, a former NBA player (he played for the Celtics, Knicks, and Nets from 1984 to 1990), has been coaching the Mavericks since 2008, the same year that Kidd rejoined the team. Before coming to Dallas, he also coached the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers. As a player, he was an NBA Champion with the Celtics. As a coach, he was won an NBA Coach of the Year Award.
