A state of emergency has been declared for Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok after violent clashes between anti-government supporters of the People’s Alliance for Democracy and the ruling People Power Party left one dead and more than 40 injured.
Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said he had no choice in issuing the state of emergency. Samak did not give a timeframe for the state of emergency, only saying it was for the good of the country.
Under the state of emergency the military has authority to restore order while civil liberties can be suspended and the media can be banned from reporting news that could instigate further violence.
It has been one week since supporters of the PAD stormed government buildings and took control of several offices, including those of the prime minister. They have since shut down airports and rail services and have promised to encourage a nationwide strike that would affect 43 state run businesses unless Samak resigned.
The PAD has accused the Samak-led government of being a front for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was removed in a coup in 2006
