Taro Aso became secretary general of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party one month ago but now it appears the 67-year-old could become the country’s newest leader following the surprise resignation announcement of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Monday.
Fukuda held the position of prime minister for less than a year before resigning due to growing criticism over the country’s economy, a scandal involving lost pension records as well as an inability to work with the upper house which seemed determined to block his legislation.
With Fukuda’s resignation came the announcement from the LDP that they would hold a vote for a new president on Sept. 22 and that president would assume the role of prime minister. Aso is now being billed as the front-runner for that position.
While the LDP plans a vote in three weeks the opposition Democratic Party of Japan has called for parliament to be dissolved and a snap election held, giving the Japanese people the choice. A general election must be held by Sept. 2009.
