Facebook's New Groups Difficult To Grasp
In order to make it simpler for users to privately share information, Facebook made some changes to its Group feature. But users may need some time to get used to this new arrangement.
The term "groups" can be a bit confusing as it has been used around the
social networking website in many ways since its early years. Starting
last week, Facebook's new Groups provide users with the opportunity to form groups similar to private club pages.
No matter if that "club" consists of your family, friends, class
project, little league or work team, it gives you the option to post
private content that only members of the group can access.
Group pages formed under the previous design will remain as they are,
but from now onwards, users will only be able to create Groups using the
new style.
Once a Group has been formed, the creator has the
option to decide whether he/she wants the group to be open, where
information and members are visible to everyone. Or it can also be
closed, where group members are visible to people, but they can't see
what information has been posted. Then there is the option of forming
secret groups, where people would only know about the group if they are
invited.
In addition to posting messages and photos, group
members can also create text documents that each member can edit. And
the entire group can take the form of a private chat window, where
all members can talk at once.
Only time will tell whether new Facebook Groups will be popular amongst users.
