The Colorado Avalanche rallied from behind and handed the Detroit Red Wings their first loss of the current season in a 5-4 victory.
The game was decided in the sixth round of a shootout with Brandon Yip scoring a beautiful goal that ensured his team's win. His wrist shot slid past Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard and was deposited in the goal net thus giving Colorado a 5-4 triumph, which is their second win of the new season but still a major encouragement after losing to Philadelphia Monday.
Colorado (2-1-0) entered the field with strong offensive strategy but they went down to a 3-1 hole during the second period when Red Wings' Johan Franzen scored his second goal of the game with 13 minutes into the second period.
The Avalanche responded with David Jones scoring his second goal with just eight minutes remaining in the second period. This was not the first time that the Avalanche came from behind during the night as it happened three times. The 4-3 lead of the Red Wings proved inefficient as the Avalanche mounted consistent attacks. They also outshot the Red Wings 38-28 in the process.
Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom was not happy with his team's performance and said that he was unable to process the reason behind their loss when they had taken a strong lead in the start.
Pavel Datsyuk scored the fourth Red Wings goal, which was the 200th of his career. The Stanley Cup prospects of the Avalanche are still unclear as the season has seen many great wins by other teams.
