Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards admitted to having faked an injury so that his frustrated teammate Nick Young could get some play time during Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks. Washington coach Flip Saunders said before Tuesday’s game, “[Arena's] knee is acting up and is a little sore, and it looks like he’s going to sit this one out.” After the game was done, Arenas confessed to his little ruse. "I told [Young] I'd sacrifice playing tonight so he can get some time in because I know he's kind of frustrated he's not getting a chance to crack the [small forward] position, especially since we're going three guards," Arenas explained. "So I told him I'll go and fake an injury or say something's wrong with me so you can start." The Washington Post later reported that, when asked how his knee was feeling, Arenas said, "I'm fine."
Arena's scheme, even if it was somewhat questionable, did pay off in the end, with Nick Young scoring 24 points to lead the Wizards to a 107-92 victory over the Hawks. Tuesday was supposed to be Arena's first game with the Wizards since he received a 50-game suspension earlier this year for bringing firearms into a locker room. According to the report from the Washington Post, Arenas is expected to play in the Wizards' Thursday game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
