Intel Still Determined To Set Foot In Mobile Markets
Intel, while unmatched in its dominance of the PC chip market, is yet to make a mark in essential growth markets such as tablets and smartphones. But the company is determined to set foot in these markets.
Decline in consumer spending offset by robust business orders proved to be helpful. Intel reported third-quarter earnings per share of 52 cents on 11.4 billion dollars in sales. The data confirms that the PC demand continues to be frail and that the success of Apple with iPad tablet is still affecting the sales of netbooks and notebooks.
According to analysts, the chip giant's 4 percent drop in Atom netbook chips is directly related to the growth of iPads.
Apple is seeking to expand the use of its own processors that are based on its iPad and iPhone. The latest version of Apple TV follows the same trend, where, Intel has no role to play thanks to the AppleA4 chip.
Paul Otellini, the CEO of Intel, praised Apple's revival of the tablet device while talking to analysts on Tuesday. He admitting that Intel missed the opportunity on Apple's iPad, but vowed to introduce more Intel based mobile devices that incorporate Microsoft Windows, Google, Nokia and Android OS in days to come.
"We fully expect to participate broadly and profitably in this category, and that in the end, the tablet category will be additive to our bottom line and not take away from it," Mr. Otellini said.
