The New Jersey Devils finally scored a victory when they overcame the Buffalo Sabres 1-0 on their home ice.
Their performance was not up to the mark but it was Martin Brodeur who helped his team by making 24 saves in what was his 111th NHL shutout. Ilya Kovalchuk scored the lone goal of the match 53 seconds into overtime that clinched the Devils their first win of the season.
Brodeur has a save percentage of .859 and helped his team to victory by blocking the Sabres for the third time in his career. It was also the 23rd time that his team won a game by 1-0 win; Devils rookie coach John MacLean also tasted his first career NHL win last night.
Devils lost to Pittsburgh Monday because of salary restrictions and injured defenseman that reduced the number of skaters to 15. Devils (1-2-1) played with 16 skaters against the Sabres, still two lower than the full allotment of 18.
In another match, the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 thanks to two goals scored by Clarke MacArthur; Francois Beauchemin and Colton Orr scored the other two goals for the team, on four of 14 shots.
The Leafs faced stiff competition as the Penguins kept on coming; they were outshot 9-2 by the Penguins in the third period but their rivals failed to score.
Penguins are 1-3 overall in this season and have lost all three games played in the Consol Energy Center, which replaced their 49 year old Civic Arena.
