West Virginia beat South Florida 20-6 in what was their season low for yards in a match played at Morgantown, W.Va., Thursday night.
Geno Smith was the ace player with his two touchdown passes and steer his team to victory although the game was lackluster in most aspects.
The Mountaineers, who are 5-1, 1-0 in the Big East Conference, capitalized on the limited scoring opportunities they had and kept the Bulls at their minimum thus ensuring a smooth victory at the end of the game.
West Virginia, who is the seventh best defense in the nation, held South Florida without an offensive touchdown for what was their second straight game. This is despite the start power of quarter back B.J. Daniels as the Mountaineers gained 298-202 lead over them.
South Florida, with their 3-3, 0-2 position, had a previous low for offense at 219 yards in a 13-9 loss to Syracuse last week. The Mountaineers had a lead of 17-3 at halftime and went on to clinch 20-6 lead to earn their victory. Both teams crossed midfield twice in the second half and each had a field goal.
Daniels ran 14 times for just four yards and completed 20 of 30 passes for 119 yards; he was replaced later in the game. He was sacked four times and managed three interceptions to earn 10 this season, greater than his total for all of 2009.
The game did not garner much interest from the spectators but a victory for the home team uplifted their spirits during the last minutes of the game.
