Government officials of Ecuador say a gold mine in El Oro province collapsed early Friday morning, trapping 4 miners. It is not yet known if the men are alive because rescue workers have been unable to make contact with them.
An official at the Ministry of Nonrenewable Natural Resources says the mine, which is located in Portovelo, collapsed around 3 a.m. The men are trapped about 500 feet underground. At least 50 rescuers are working to reach the men.
The accident comes 2 days after 33 Chilean miners were rescued after being trapped underground for more than 2 months.
