Elena Dementieva continued her push for her first Grand Slam singles title as she knocked off Patty Schnyder in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday at the 2008 U.S. Open to advance to the semifinals.
Dementieva played a controlled style of tennis that put 80 percent of her first serves in play and she won 77 percent of those offerings. The Russian committed just 14 unforced errors while capitalizing on 5 of 13 break point opportunities. In comparison Schnyder had just two chances to break Dementieva’s serve.
Dementieva reached the finals at the 2004 U.S. Open and in that same year she reached the finals at the French Open but came up short. She did win the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
