Don LaFontaine, King of Voiceovers, Dies at Age 68

Don LaFontaine, the premier voice of thousands of movie trailers, died Monday Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at age 68. He recently turned 68 last Tuesday.

According to reports, the cause of death was a complication in the treatment of his ongoing illness, pneumothorax, which is best known as collapsed lung.

LaFontaine made more than 5,000 trailers and 750,000 television spots in his 33-year career in the promo industry. LaFontaine also coined the term "in a world where..."

In a recent 2006 GEICO commercial, LaFontaine made a rare public appearance, spoofing himself using his voiceover abilities.

At the height of his career, LaFontained is said to have voiced about 60 promotions a week, and sometimes as many as 35 in a single day.

LaFontaine remained working until recently, averaging seven to 10 voiceover sessions a day. He worked from a home studio his wife nicknamed "The Hole," where his fax machine delivered scripts.

LaFontaine is survived by his wife, singer/actress Nita Whitaker, and three daughters. Funeral arrangements are pending.
