Jerry Reed, who gained fame as a country music singer with hits like “Amos Moses,” “The Bird,” “East Bound and Down,” and “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot,” died on Monday of complications from emphysema. Reed was 71.
Along with his career as a successful musician Reed also became a recognizable face on the big screen as he made his film debut in the Burt Reynolds led “Smokey and the Bandit” and added pictures like “The Survivors” and “The Waterboy” to his credit.
As a talented guitarist and gifted singer Reed won a Grammy Award in 1972 for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot.”
Before making it as a singer and actor Reed relied on his songwriting abilities to make a living and in 1968 he had a pair of his songs sung by Elvis Presley (“U.S. Male,” and “Guitar Man”) and in 1972 Johnny Cash sung “A Thing Called Love.”
