Isaac Zamora Arrested in Deadly Skagit County Shooting Spree

A man recently jailed on drug charges has been arrested in a shooting spree Tuesday that left six people dead and two others injured in Skagit County Washington. The gunman has been identified as Isaac Zamora, 28, by the Statement Department of Corrections.

Zamora was released from prison on August 6 after serving a 6-month jail sentence. He was under community supervision by corrections officers. Zamora’s mother Denise has described her son as “desperately mentally ill” and has sought help.

The first shootings were reported around 2 p.m. Tuesday. A deputy, identified as Anne Jackson, was among the dead. She was shot responding to the initial emergency call placed by Denise Zamora. A second unidentified person was shot nearby as well as two construction workers. Another unidentified victim was found dead a few houses away.

A motorist was killed as Zamora fled to I-5 and a Washington State Patrol trooper was shot while trying to stop him on the freeway. A motorcyclist was also shot in the arm at a Shell gas station. Zamora was taken into custody around 4:30 p.m.

Denise Zamora said Deputy Jackson had tried to help her son in the past. She described her as “very gracious.” “She knew exactly what we were going through, said her brother was going through some similar stuff,” Zamora said.

“We’re so devastated for the families. I wish it would have been him or me that was killed. That’s how deeply I feel about it,” she added.
