Roger Federer survived a punishing five-set battle with Igor Andreev on Tuesday to beat the Russian 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals at the 2008 U.S. Open.
Federer wasn’t exactly sharp in his Tuesday match against Andreev as he committed an uncharacteristic 60 unforced errors and a minimal 11 aces but when it came to big points the Swiss star buckled down as he allowed Andreev to break his serve on just 2 of 15 opportunities.
Federer is searching for his first Grand Slam win of 2008, he reached the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon but fell to Rafael Nadal both times. The 27-year-old has won the last four U.S. Open tournaments and he has won at least one Grand Slam singles title every year dating back to his 2003 Wimbledon victory
