Motorcade of Pakistani PM Yousuf Raza Gilani Attacked by Gunfire

Gunmen positioned atop a hill opened fire on the motorcade of Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday in what is being called an assassination attempt.

No one was injured in the attack as bullets hit the window of an armored vehicle but did not penetrate the glass.

Pakistani officials have remained silent on whether Gilani was in the motorcade at the time of the attack. Some reports have indicated the motorcade was on the way to pick up the PM at the Islamabad airport while other reports have said the motorcade was returning from the airport when it fell under attack.

Pakistan’s Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik confirmed Gilani’s safety stating, “I spoke to the prime minister, and by the grace of God, he is safe and sound.”

No suspects have been apprehended in the attack but the Pakistani Taliban is already being called the likely organizers while al-Qaeda has also been labeled possible suspects.

Gilani was elected prime minister in February and has faced mounting pressure from Islamic militant groups who view Pakistan’s government as allies of the West.
