Stocks Are Modestly Lower Ahead of Economic Data on Factory Orders

Stocks declined modestly in early trading Wednesday, with investors again appearing more concerned about the weak economy than relieved about falling commodities prices.

Oil prices have fallen significantly since earlier this summer, and dipped to about $108 a barrel on Wednesday as the dollar strengthened and Hurricane Gustav appeared to leave oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico largely undamaged. Investors have also shifted their attention to slowing global demand for crude.

In the first hour of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 1.30, or 0.01 percent, to 11,515.62.

Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index shed 0.25, or 0.02 percent, to 1,277.33, and the Nasdaq composite index slipped 3.62, or 0.15 percent, to 2,345.62.

Bond prices moved higher Wednesday. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to 3.70 percent from 3.74 percent in late trading on Tuesday.
